The Offspring - Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace-REVIEW

Okay, after one listen, I had really mixed feelings about this album. The first half of this album is vintage, classic offpsring; the offspring that I listen to, not the poppy offspring that exists soley to make money, but the punk offspring that exists around the few poppy songs they put out every album (which i like to believe they do so to make some money to continue writing the other songs that I enjoy). I thought after track 6, "could it really be like this the whole album?"... nope. after around the half way mark (Kristy, Are You Doing OK), it's pretty much a different album for the rest of the cd. or not so different as some of these songs have riffs that sound like they came from other offsrping songs (Lets Hear It For Rock Bottom) I'd like to believe they thought to put the best tracks up front and left the crap that the studio wanted on the back end, but if wishes were fishes...

So yesterday, I would've lambasted this album, however after just listening to it again just now, I'm inclined to be kinder to it. The offspring have gone through some changes in there lineup with the departure of their drummer and basist within the past 5 years, frontman dexter and noodles on lead guitar keep up appearances. Like I said, the first half is pure offspring awesomeness. This is definatly an album I would recommend to demo first before you purchase If I had the choice, I would probably buy the first 5 or 6 tracks via iTunes (but somewhere better) but I bet you could pick up this album for around $10 at wal-mart during the first month on the market.

I don't hate this album, more that anything, I'm dissappointed. Like a parent who knows their kids can be so much more. BE SO MUCH MORE, OFFSPRING!

Final recommendation: Borrow from friend and listen, unless you really like the Offspring. Or buy the first 6 tracks from your local mp3 retailer. 3 outta 5 stars.

Coming up later, I review WEEZER - The Red Album.

*edit* sorry, but since only half the album was good, i need to adjust my rating so I can sleep better at night. 2.5 out of 5 stars.
