Over at lonesomecrowdedthoughts.blogspot.com (could you think of a longer name Andrew?) there's a Vista optimization post worth a read. At the end, the poster counsels "Lastly, don't "upgrade" to vista. Stay with XP and be content!". And I'd like to echo that if only in name...
If you have a computer and it has XP, for the love of all that is holy, don't worry about upgrading. XP runs great on your computer and it loves your computer. With SP3, it's making out with your computer when you aren't using it.
That said, if you are building a new computer with new components or buying a new computer/laptop, it only makes sense to buy/have Vista on it and here are my reasons: dispute at will...
1) Vista is the next step. There is a lot of new tech under the hood, transparent to most users eyes. It uses your computers resources to the fullest.
2) XP will phase out. I know a lot of people still use W2K, but XP was more than a paint of coat and Vista is the same.
3) Vista is stable, and runs fine. With the release of SP1, Vista a solid. Frankly, most of the problems stemmed from hardware manufacturers not making it a priority of fine tuning there drivers for vista. Now, those problems are for the most part solves.
4) 64-bit Vista is solid. Now, I know I'll get "64 bit? Whatever dude, you'll never need that, not for a long time." That may be true, but 64 bit computing releases the 4G limit on ram and introduces safer and more secure computing. With 64-bit vista, the drivers that come with your hardware must be legit, or it will not install. Closing another hole for malicsious code. Most hardware come with both 32 and 64 bit drivers, so spend the extra 5 bucks and get 64bit. I personally run 64-bit Vista on all 4 systems I have that are capable and they run just fine.
5) Pricing. Xp will no longer be manufactured come June, so the only copies available will be at your local store. Once they are gone, they are gone. And right now, pricing is pretty much equal if not in Vista's favor. Especially OEM versions.
6) Ignore this post and do some research/testing on your own. The only way to find out for sure is to test drive. The salesman may talk a good talk but you need some alone time with the product to find out for sure.
XP will go down as one of the best OS's ever. To some, it was the Second Coming and Vista is the apocolypse. If you want my opinion (and if you read this far, apparantly you do) Vista is a fine successor. There are a lot of cool apps that come with it (a DVD decoder, a DVD maker, improved Movie Maker, that is actually quite powerfull, etc.) and it's purdy. But don't take my word for it, find out yourself. But don't upgrade your 2 year old system to Vista. Hardware has come a long way since then and you are better off with XP for now.
FLAME ON!!!

there are probably some reasons to upgrade i guess, but even with fairly new hardware, i don't want to upgrade. you make some good points though and i don't want to crap on your post. i will say that you first point specifying that vista uses your resources to the fullest is both a plus and minus(at least in my eyes). Its good that its grabbing idle cycles and memory to do stuff behind the scenes, but it can also slow things down a bit. But basically, im happy right now with xp. Windows 7 anyone?
Yeah, i can see your point about the resources.
About Windows 7 though... some people are already heralding it as the third comming and they don't know what it will even entail. And I really think most people don't even know what to expect in an operating system. When it comes down to it, Xp does a lot of things that vista does and that linux does and that OSX does. I think a majority of those with a negative opinion of vista come to that conclusion simply because "everyone" is saying so. How many times at my office does someone come talk to me and mention how horrible Vista or Apple is. Those people are absolute IDIOTS. They only know what they are told and think it's somehow... hip? to spout nonesense like that.
Anyway, a little sidetracked. I did absolutely stress to only get vista either bundled on a new system or with new parts as driver issues and hardware demands are more easily met by doing so. XP is still pretty awesome.
yeah, i mean, i have 3 licenses for vista, but have yet to use even one of them. maybe someday. At this point there is nothing that I do on a computer that XP doesn't allow me to do. so, you know at this point its just like whatever.
About windows 7, yeah, nobody has any idea.
